ABOVE THE FUNKY MUNKY

Dorothy Hubbard lived above the Funky Munky cafe. She sat at the window worrying about her cat, Mr. Tubbs, who she hadn’t seen since the previous evening.

Across the corridor lived Professor Benjamin, a dour man who kept to himself. He worked at the university in the Natural Sciences department.

On the floor above lived Mr. and Mrs. Holdensmythe. He lived in apartment three, she lived in apartment four. This way their marriage could continue amicably. As they argued, a droplet fell from the ceiling and turned Mr. Holdensmythe’s glass of water a dark red colour.

Shy Marigold Tweddleberry lived on the top floor. She peered out the peephole in her door, hoping to catch a glimpse of the handsome boy who had just moved in.

Across the hallway, Timothy watched the blood pool on the floorboards as it dripped from the slit in Mr. Tubbs’ throat. He was looking forward to Professor Benjamin’s class on feline biology. He liked to impress Professor Benjamin, that’s why he had moved into the apartments above the Funky Munky cafe.

  8. I love this story very much and now I am slightly afraid for the professor.
What would happen if they needed a human specimen?
    Oh dear!

  10. Well, Timothy needs some help and it’s not with his natural sciences studies. Great little snapshots and a great way of building tension – that drop of red in the water was a super touch. Nicely done

  16. Wonderful to let the imagination run! I love a drama that includes lots of side-line dramas; such as this… each one a story on its own, really!
    Have you written for TV?

    1. Thanks Carolyn, very kind comment. I haven’t written for TV but I do work in TV as an editor and studied film and TV, so I guess it comes through in my writing.

  18. How incredibly random. I used to be very involved with a cafe/bar.club called the Funky Munky in Camberwell, London. I almost bought it once too. Small world. I’m enjoying your writing.
