Sand looked out the window of the small twin propeller plane at the fjord landscape passing by below him. As the plane took him further north the weak sunlight dipped below the horizon until it became black.
The call had come in while they were questioning Brit Moen at the station.
‘Dag Moen,’ Brit answered when asked her son’s name.
Gabi went out and ran the name through the police computer. No criminal record. They found his birth certificate on the city records. The father was given as ‘Unknown.’
They could get nothing else from her. No clue as to where they could find Dag Moen now that he had left the family home.
‘So far he hasn’t harmed a person, but it sounds like he intends to.’ Sand said later in Pedersen’s office. ‘Until he surfaces again and we find out who ‘D’ is, there’s not much we can do. Gabi is going over my old case notes, looking for anyone with a name starting with D that could be a target.’
Brit Moen had been released. That night the call came in. A murder in the far north of Norway, in the Alta region. The victim’s name was Dahlia Solberg. Pedersen had asked for any homicides in the country to be reported to his office.
‘Who was she?’ Pedersen asked.
Gabi answered from her notes. ‘Dahlia Solberg. Born in Oslo. Was reported missing when she was 16, at the same time as Bjarne Johansen was found dead. Turned out she was Bjarne Johansen’s girlfriend when he was murdered. She only turned up after Eckberg had been caught, so she was never questioned. Nothing else on the file for the last twenty years. She’s been living in Alta for most of that time.’
Sand picked up from his partner. ‘Johansen was bisexual. He saw that Eckberg wasn’t a balanced individual and broke it off with him. He took up with Dahlia.’
‘So Dag Moen thinks Dahlia stole his father’s boyfriend from him?’ Pedersen asked.
‘In his head, I guess so,’ Sand answered.
‘We have our ‘D’ victim. You better go up there and see what you can find.’ Pedersen said. ‘Gabi, you stay here and go over the files. Find out who is going to be ‘E’ in Moen’s alphabet. This is officially a homicide investigation now. Use the resources available to you.’
The plane landed in pitch black at the small airstrip. A car was there to meet Sand. It took him straight to the murder scene.
Dahlia Solberg had been found inside the igloo hotel, Sorrisniva. The hotel opened each winter, carved and sculptured from ice every year. It wasn’t Sand’s idea of a comfortable holiday, but apparently it was a popular experience. It had closed at the start of April.
Sand stepped out of the car and looked at the strange ice building.
Dahlia had stayed on to close up for the season. She had been found in what had been the luxury suite of the hotel, limbs pegged out in a star shape, sliced open from stomach to neck, intestines turned out, head separated from her body. The way Eckberg had left her former lover Bjarne Johansen twenty years earlier.
This is part nine of my A to Z Challenge 2017. More information on the challenge, and other stories and blogs taking part in it, can be found HERE.
Throughout April I hope to publish a section a day, relating to a letter of the alphabet, which in the end will make up a continuous story, all based round the objects found in this children’s jigsaw:
Other entries in the challenge, and a version of the final complete, joined up story can be found here: A TO Z CHALLENGE 2017.
Gory way to murder someone 😨

Ya, I know…… If it was a book I would have finished it on day one itself. 😀

I like your children’s jigsaw idea:) I also like this: “the weak sunlight dipped below the horizon until it became black.” Am intrigued to see how all this ends up.

Gruesome.
But the police have a strategy, don’t they? I like the idea of following the alphabet in the story too, but at the moment, that sounds a bit random.

The police are a step behind at the moment for sure.

Ah, so that’s where the poor “gate” woman fits into the story.

I love this, it’s like I can’t stop reading, even though I know it will be gory! I cannot wait to see how you work in the other letters 🙂

Thank you. I’ll be honest, I think J for Jelly is the most challenging yet. We’ll see what tomorrow brings!

Haha, I can see that. But love how you’re tying it all together. Not an easy task!

Finally we have D. But what a way to find her. Poor thing.
P.S. Can this month go any slower?! I’m dying to read the next chapter and the next and the next…..

The anticipation is part of the enjoyment with serials. I’m a couple of days ahead with writing it, I think you’ll like it!

Gruesome, your story is getting so interesting everyday and I look at your puzzle for inspiration for props, I am using props in my stories too 😊, wish i had thought of making an image like your jigsaw

So, I’m gonna have to go back and discover (re-discover?) what Detective Sands’ first name is. Hoping for his sake it isn’t Emil. Zed would be nice. Give him a good long time to catch up to Dag’s thinking. But if I’m a citizen of Norway who might be even peripherally involved, I’m hoping Sands’ first name is Emil so he gets on top of things NOW!

Oh right, Anders. Never mind that theory, we’re already past him!

Afraid we haven’t had an A victim yet, and a previous note from the killer indicated that space was saved for Anders already… Detective Sand has a killer coming for him!

I love the continuity between your stories. I love the feel of today’s post. That aggravating feeling when you know something is wrong but you cannot fix it right away. We’re only human. Your writing instantly has the feel of its location without drawn out descriptions.

Thank you. Trying to fit a lot into a few words is tricky. I’m glad the sense of location came across. Hope you’ll be back to see how the story develops.

Wow, thank you so much. I hope you enjoy the collection of short stories. I’m enjoying this challenge being able to write something longer, and look out for my first novel sometime later this year! First, I’ve got to finish this challenge though 🙂

Yes, if there is an innocent victim in the story, it’s poor Dahlia 😦

Whilst I’m fascinated I’m struggling to ‘like’ the posts where someone/thing gets sliced and starred. Glad I got to here before work but now I’ve got to make do with one slice of Sand a day for the rest of the month. You sure you don’t want to post all of what you’ve got written now? We won’t tell.

Thanks for sticking with it. I can promise it won’t get any more gory (I think) so if you’ve made it this far you will be able to cope with the rest! J for Jelly is up now – and not the wobbly kind!!

I just wonder if you can clear the alphabet with victims before you claim all 26 letters with stories.
