THE SOURCE

Frost covered the grass and branches. Well-layered joggers trotted past at various paces.

She wrapped her arms around herself, the thick coat and gloves failing to halt the chill.

Mothers pushed buggies, couples walked hand-in-hand, dog-walkers pulled leads or were dragged by them, tourists swarmed.

She didn’t know what to expect; she hadn’t formed a picture of the person she had received the anonymous messages from.

A dog escaped it’s owner and careered towards her. She leaned forward and patted it with her gloved hand and smiled at the owner.

As she sat back on the bench she saw the brown envelope. She turned. There was no one there. She stood, scanning the pathways. Did she catch a glimpse of a back hurrying away?

She pulled off a glove with her teeth and opened the envelope. Inside was a sheet of paper and a portable hard drive.

On the paper was a written message: ‘You promised.’

She began running back to the newspaper office, leaving Lafayette Park behind as the white edifice looked on.

  1. Oh the dreaded ‘you promised’ note. Life has a way of polling three things at our feet without explanation. Nice piece of tension with calm scene before hand

That’s one well trained dog, and one tempting story.

    1. So you think the dog is in on it? I couldn’t decide if it was part of the ‘drop’ or just a coincidence!

  4. Brilliant, Iain! I wonder who she is , what she does. An ex-official, a secret agent?
    Such an intriguing read!

  5. Okay, I’ll bite. Promised what and what’s on the hard drive?

    1. I’m thinking a promise to publish the information, get it the public and/or the authorities, perhaps to protect the identity of the source too. As to what’s on it, well, we’re in Washington and we’re near the White House so government secrets, or perhaps another bestselling expose of the inside of the White House!

  7. I have a feeling a really juicy news story, complete with pictures and documents, will show up in the Washington Post in a day or two. The “white edifice” must be the White House. So whatever is on the hard drive must be pretty damning. Loved the tension and the build up in this.

    1. You have joined the dots up pretty well. I had just been to see ‘The Post’ – a pretty good film if you like that sort of story of good old fashioned journalism and intrigue.

    1. What do you think is on the drive? I hope she does keep her promise too.

      1. I think it’s the proof that she’s been hoping for. She has what she needs to bring those bastards to justice. She hopes that her editor or other higher ups don’t kill the story, or she’ll have to find another way to keep her promise. I just hope she watches her back! ☺
