BUCKET LIST

Why did he need to have a bucket list? Agnes was insistent this was something he needed to tick off it, whether he had one or not. Happy 60th, darling!

So here Archie was, standing in a basket, strapped to a vast nylon balloon. Agnes waved and snapped another picture.

The hot air balloon was tethered to the ground by two mooring ropes. Gary, the pilot, jumped over the side, back onto the ground, ‘Just need to untie the ropes,’ he smiled at Archie.

Gary did not inspire Archie with confidence. He had arrived late in a battered old van and pulled the balloon from the back. He apologised, his usual assistants were unavailable. Would Agnes and Archie help him unroll the material?

An ideal day for it, calm and sunny, Gary had said. Archie could feel the building breeze, but didn’t say anything.

Gary undid one tether, then the other. As he jogged back to the basket the inevitable gust of wind took it off the ground.

Gary held on until the ground was ten feet below him, then thought better of it and let go.

Agnes and Gary watched Archie grow smaller as the balloon drifted higher into the sky.

  2. Do you think there is mobile phone reception up there? I would love to drive my own balloon but ground to air directions would be welcomed. Methinks you should write a sequel.

    1. I agree, the idea of doing it would be wonderful – perhaps some lessons first though! Thanks Hester

  3. As long as Agnes and Archie don’t heat up the air in the balloon, it will slowly descend. When I lived in the foothills, I once saw a hot air balloon land unintentionally on a small path between two rises. Must have been heck to get it out again.

I hold no desires for hot air ballooning or sky jumping. My bucket list consist of things to do that guarantee my return in one piece.

  12. I have to wonder if Agnes has a large life insurance policy on Archie. Hopefully Archie returns to earth safely. I would hate to think their story ends here. Nice one Iain!

  14. My hot air balloon experience was much less exciting than this one. I would think it would land quite soon without the heater putting more hot air in the balloon. I have a vague memory of the “captain” sending extra blasts up to keep the balloon from landing. He might land in a tree or in the water or come down too fast with a crash. The possibilities are endless. Did Agnes go with a dodgy company because it was cheap? Why didn’t she go up too? I’m sure it wouldn’t have cost any more as it must have been very expensive for a solo flight.

    1. I think Agnes never had any intention of letting her feet leave the ground. As for the company she hired, well, she’s working on a limited budget for Archie to save the money to get herself something nice 🙂
