He’d felt like a big kid again riding his bike to the park.

He picked up a coffee and a doughnut from the 24-hour drive-through, the only place open that early in the morning. Now he sat and ate them on the picnic table.

A couple of ducks sauntered over, pecking around for some crumbs.

No-one else was about. He savoured the peace and quiet, the chance to eat his snack undisturbed, the sense of calm.

The only downside was the march of time. He would have to return soon.

He finished the sweet treat and had to gulp down the last of his drink.

The kids would be waking, his wife could keep them at bay for only so long. It was enough that she had granted him this quiet moment.

He got back on his bike and cycled off, ready to face the rest of Father’s Day.
