PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

‘Man, all three of you couldn’t hit a barn door. Try again.’ Hank loaded a clay into the thrower. ‘Ready?’

‘Pull!’

The clay disc fired out over the field. Three shots fired off. The clay landed in one piece a hundred yards away.

‘Dammit, these guns is useless,’ whined Dwight. ‘How we expected to hit those itty-bitty things flying about anyway?’

The others yucked at Dwight’s outburst.

The smoke cleared round the classroom. It was eerily quiet and still as all the screaming and running died away.

They could hear the police arriving outside.

‘How many you get, Dwight?’ Hank asked, crouched behind the desk.

‘I think I got me four, including that stuck up Darcy,’ Dwight grinned. ‘Won’t see her sniggering behind my back in Maths anymore.’

The others yucked at Dwight’s outburst.

  1. Shit, that’s grim. Doesn’t sit well, makes me think dark thoughts, but is brilliant. Well done Iain.

How does society deal with that. Guns and humanity just do not sit well together.

    1. Looking at a few of the other comments- I wasn’t taking it as seriously as others were. It’s definitely something that is realistic nowadays.

      1. I think the humour is there for them, part of how they don’t fully comprehend the horror of what they are really doing.

  12. Yikes. I went skeet shooting with my Dad plenty of times when I was young. I never became a firearms hobbyist like he was, but my brother and son did.

    1. I have never tried it, I would admit to being curious enough to give it a go.

  13. Dwight shot a few students in school? That is why he was practicing? Scary, when people get angry and have access to a gun.

    1. Perhaps not why he was practicing, but it was where it ended up taking him.

  14. Iain, this is really really good. I love how you went outside the box to give attention to the shootings in our society. It was jarring and that can be so important. Thank you! You made me think. Blessings, Debbie
