LAY ME DOWN HERE IN THE SHADE IN THIS SMALL HOLLOW IN THE GROUND

Lay me down here in the shade in this small hollow in the ground,
Let the rush of the world pass me by,
Lay me down and let me rest awhile,
Take the weight off my shoulders for I can carry it no longer,
Release my burden for I am too old to carry on,
My weary head is bowed, my back is broken.

Lay me down here in the shade in this small hollow in the ground,
For life has finally worn me away,
Lay me down and leave me to my peaceful sleep,
The weight must pass to those that can shoulder it,
For I have done all I can and can suffer no more,
My life has been lived, my spirit is free.

  1. Seems like several others have mentioned, I am experiencing the dropping of blogs I follow Iain.

    1. I seem to be as well Di, at least it is a common problem, hopefully something WordPress can look at.

      1. I’ve noticed a few changes in formats and layouts but as far as I know I’m still on the old platform/reader/editor.

  2. what a sadly beautiful write here. The phrase “lay me down”… reminds me of many poems read and written over the years. Especially the poem “Do not stand at my grave and weep” by Mary Elizabeth Frye. I’ve read it many a time at Memorial Day.

    1. Thank you, I wasn’t planning a poem but that phrase seemed to inspire it.

  3. [ my life has been lived…]

Are the words my mother told me when her cancer came back.

It encouraged me to live my life and not just exist.

And when she passed the first thing I noticed was her spirit being freed.

    I’m grateful.

Such a beautiful poem, Iain. I can see it as a touching epitaph on a great person’s tomb, or as a poignant but fitting reading at a service of remembrance. You’ve created something quite special here.
