RECLAMATION

The water rolled in. She could see nothing on the horizon, just the deep blue water.

This was it – the last small remaining piece of land was slowly being swallowed.

The ships were ready to launch, floating cities that they hoped would sustain them. For how long, no one could guess.

The hope was that the water level would one day begin to drop. The land was still there, the old world they had once inhabited, now entombed. Perhaps a future generation could reclaim it from the sea.

But it would not happen in her lifetime, she knew that.

She walked into the water, throwing off her dress, feeling the cold, salty liquid embalm her, claiming her as it had so many others. She started to swim.

She had no idea how long she could keep going for.

Soon she was just a small dot, another soul lost under the waves, joining the billions more in their murky, deep graves.

  1. A tragic tale all too relevant to our era. Perhaps she chose a better end than many…

    1. Thanks Lisa, and thank you so much for your wonderful review of my book – about to reblog it now. Such feedback is so good to get – and I’m so glad you picked up on the character of Montana and her non-binary gender, it was something I wanted to very much include in a future world. Really much appreciated, thanks again 🙂
