Shovelling the seaweed away, Agnes was not happy.

‘Fourth time this year,’ she muttered and threw a disgruntled stare at the waves lapping against the ineffective flood wall.

Archie pulled up in the hire van. He drove over the seaweed Agnes had spent the last hour gathering into one neat pile.

‘Next lot ready?’ he called, and saw Agnes glaring at him.

‘It was.’

Not for the first time, Archie wondered what he had done to upset her.

A bewildered crab scuttled in front of Agnes, searching for a way back to the rock pools. She prodded it on its way with a mutter.

What a year.
