He tried not to tense. Stay relaxed, but focussed. He was sweating in the warm sun, the droplets of moisture ran into his eyes. He blinked them away and carried on. Almost there. He skilfully removed the bone, held between the small tweezers, from the opening in the arm and when he drew the instrument clear he gave a sigh of relief.
Agnes cheered, ‘Well done! That’s a win for you.’ She made a small mark in her notebook. That makes it 858,394 wins to you and 861,791 to me. Still all to play for. Time for another round before bed?’
Archie prayed the batteries would finally run out on the game, so at least he could get a break for an hour while Agnes went out on an ‘essential’ visit to the shop to buy more.
He thought back to that fateful moment when he had suggested they try a board game to pass some time. Agnes had not wanted to, but he had urged her to join in with those fatal words:
‘How about a quick game of ‘Operation’?’
