GET WELL SOON

The balloon, much like herself, was sagged and deflated. The flowers had started to curl up and wilt. A lovely gesture when she had started feeling low, their garish, fading colours mocked her now.

She looks at the letter once more, just to be sure. She had known it, even when she had smiled at her visitors and told them she would be fine. Now she could stop pretending.

She picks up her phone and dials. The bright, breezy answer from her daughter.

‘Hi darling. I’ve had some news.’

The deadening silence as the balloon fades and a petal floats to the ground.

I was delighted to receive the author copies of my new novel ‘The Barra Boy’ from my publisher this week. Here’s a video of the big reveal, assisted by my daughter! If any of my Friday Fictioneer colleagues, or anyone else, are interested in receiving a copy, all the details can be found HERE.

  8. Iain if I’m reading this right, her daughter is happy she is sick?? That’s so messed up! It really makes me want to know more about the situation. You could build a book around this story.

P.S. I love your video. Your daughter is sharp and so adorable in her support of you.

    1. My daughter is sharp, too sharp by half! I didn’t write it as her daughter being happy she is sick, but that would make an interesting story to expand – maybe I should have – I’ll take your idea and claim I meant it! 😉

  9. Tense story; why do we always hide when we’re feeling vulnerable?
And yes, what a great kid, who calls ’em as she sees him: Her smart daddy!

  13. Wow. That hit close to home.
My brother had surgery to remove cancer a couple months ago. He has always downplayed the issue, saying he’s doing fine. Now, (right on cue) the doctors say they didn’t get it all and want to do another surgery. He says “No way am I going through that again.” I don’t blame him.
