BEST LAID PLANS

Yvegeny Shiskin sat in the imposing corridor. He dabbed his forehead to remove sweat and adjusted his spectacles.

The chief had been with the President for an hour. Yvegeny wondered how his report was being received.

He nervously fingered his copy of it. His entire life’s work. Now the time had come. The years of patience, bribes, sabotage, social engineering, influencing global markets and mergers had paid off. The man they wanted in charge had taken office. The sleeper agents were in place in key positions around him.

He thought back to the young faces he had selected thirty years ago. Leaving the homeland, they had sacrificed their lives to the cause. They would be expecting their call now.

Yvegeny shook his head and flicked open his report. He re-read the conclusion:

“Recommend agents remain in place but are NOT activated. It is my strong belief that all our key objectives can be achieved without any influence or interference with the new President.”

What a waste, he shrugged.

Written for โ€˜What Pegman Sawโ€™, a weekly prompt based on a view from Google Maps. The idea is to write a piece of fiction of around 150 words based on the prompt. Full details can be found HERE.

One of those wonderful pieces that leave one wondering if it’s fact or fiction. Well done!

Thanks, I suspect Russia is keeping a close eye on things but is quite happy to let things unravel all by themselves!

Topical and weaves between fact and fiction I imagine.

Interesting take on the suspicion of Russian interference with the American elections.

I think whatever the truth Russia is probably quite happy with how things are going so far…

The whole “sleeper agent” thing reminds me of a lot of cold war thrillers that came out in the 1960s and 70s. Having grown up during that era, I read and watched those sort of stories quite a bit.

Haha! Cheeky! It will be interesting (and possibly terrifying) to see how Trump gets on with Russia in the coming years and while no one would say it’s wise to make enemies with Putin, I’m pretty sure we don’t want these two being best mates either. Great tale, Iain

Thanks Lynn, a good point you make – we don’t want them being arch enemies or best friends. A tricky line for an experienced politician to tread, never mind someone as undiplomatic as Trump.

Oh, you’re right. I’m trying not to think too much about it …

Torn from today’s headlines, as they say. I love how many of us are responding to yesterday’s obscenity by moving forward in a creative direction. Well done.

If nothing else the last year and the next four will provide plenty of storylines for creative writers. A small silver lining admittedly.

    Dear Iain,

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” Abraham Lincoln.
    I’m afraid.
    Well written.
