IAIN KELLY

UNCIVIL RIGHTS

‘It doesn’t even need a scarecrow, it’s a wild flower border!’

He stormed out the door, to be confronted by the ridiculous face grinning at him, atop patterned dress and handbag.

He was all for equality, he was all for ending gender stereotyping, he was right behind the #metoo movement.

But her latest statement was too much. The other farmers and neighbours would be mocking him for years.

He’d refused to let her change the scarecrow he used in the fields. ‘Ol’ Harry’ had been guarding his crops for decades and had done just fine. So this was her response, right in front of their house.

Well, he was having none of it.

He bent down to pull it out of the ground.

Thunk! The handbag smacked off the back of his head. ‘What the…?’

‘Get out from under my dress, we have rights too.’

As he stood up, rubbing his head, the scarecrow swung round and the bag hit him on the face.

Bewildered he walked away. He had more important things to do than worry about this.

From the window, holding the remote control, Felicity chuckled. Wait until she got these pictures uploaded onto social media.

Great twist. Remote controlled scarecrow! May be next one will be satellite monitored. A good mix of anger and humour.

This is too funny Iain. I love how you give voice to equal right using the scarecrow. And your punch line is great. For a moment, I thought you were heading toward the Wizard of Oz.

I must say he seems very calm for someone attacked with a handbag by a talking scarecrow! 🙂
