‘Give me your shirt,’ Gabriella told him. Danny removed his jacket and shirt and handed it to her. She ripped it into shreds and began wrapping it round Henrik’s chest. ‘It’s a clean wound, in and out. Gone through the lung but he should survive if we get him to a hospital soon enough.’
‘How long until we get back to the city?’ Danny shouted to Phillips.
‘Without delays about two hours. Will he make it?’
‘He should do. He’s in decent shape, but he’s lost a lot of blood.’ Gabriella answered.
The car surged forward as Phillips pressed down hard on the accelerator pedal. Danny felt the movement and remembered the joy of driving manually. The car interior was antiquated. There was no gear stick, it wasn’t that old, but the steering wheel with the buttons and paddles on the dashboard were from a bygone era. The way Phillips handled the manual drive vehicle suggested he had a lot of experience.
With Henrik stabilised on the floor of the car, Gabriella climbed back through to the front. They carried on driving through the mountainous landscape, the steep slopes towering over them on either side. After fifteen minutes they heard the noise above them. Gabriella leaned out the window and looked up.
‘Tracker drone,’ she confirmed.
‘To be expected,’ Phillips replied. ‘We’re okay, so long as we get to the city before they send anything else that could do us more damage.’
Danny leaned forward. ’The gun,’ he pointed at the handgun Gabriella still had in her hand, and the rifle on her lap.
‘Seriously?’ Gabriella handed the weapons back to Danny.
‘You’re still under arrest for the murder of Consul Donald Parkinson.’
