IAIN KELLY

DOING YOUR DUTY

A note sat next to the baking tray. For the best Daddy in the world.

‘They’re very colourful. You decorated them all by yourself?’

A shy nod of the head.

He was going to have to eat one of them. ‘Which one should I have?’

The pudgy finger pointed at a biscuit covered in a mound of green icing and a liberal mess of decoration.

‘A cat,’ he guessed.

Eager eyes watched him as he picked it up and bit into the hard substance.

He felt the tooth crack on the first bite.

‘Mmmmmmmmmm,’ he grimaced through the pain. ‘Delicious.’

Ouch! I broke a tooth last November, so I can empathize with this guy.

I like how, in a short space, you showed the guy’s ability to compliment his child on the cookie — despite the pain he felt. A good dad move.

Oh no! I hope he has that looked at as soon as possible. Agreed that this is good dad in action, but good dad needs to get himself to the dentist as soon as this is over or good dad might get an infection and then what? Man, I am channeling my mom talking to my dad now. Really fun story.
