The evening sun pours in through the west-facing window, painting your silhouette onto the wall. I recognise the familiar pose – the bowed head, chin resting on your hand, eyes turned to the side, pondering, thinking, battling with the words that will eventually pour themselves onto the screen in front of you.
They always come eventually, the words. In the meantime, we sit and wait. That’s the process. Your process. I have the patience to wait until they arrive, more so than you at times. It will be worth it, in the setting sun, to see your smile once more.

Yesterday, I went to the largest bookstore in Scotland, Waterstones on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow – a shop I have spent far too much time and money in over the years, where I have sat in the cafe with my laptop typing out first drafts and failed attempts, where I bought most of the English Lit. course books in my university days – and got to see my own book sitting on the table along side some of the best writers in Scotland. It was a happy day.
