IT IS ENOUGH

It isn’t much, but it’s more than most have now. It is a roof and solid walls. The oil lamp will give me light during the nights.

There is no radio or television or computer, but I have paper and pencil.

It is hard to write from my imagination. What I have seen in the last months weighs heavily and refuses to make way.

So I will write the truth. I will write about what I have seen, I will write about what we have experienced. One day, maybe the world will read what I have written.

The ground shakes. Another night of violence closes in.

Written for Friday Fictioneers hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields (more details HERE). The idea is to write a short story of 100 words based on the photo prompt (above).

To read more stories of 100 words based on this week’s prompt, visit HERE.

My new novel All We Cannot Leave Behind is coming February 2024 and the paperback can be preordered now.

The State Trilogy and The Barra Boy available now.

  3. Dear Iain,

I see by your tags I was correct about your story. The truth isn’t exactly coming from the news media. Well done.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

    1. Thanks Rochelle. Of course it could be anywhere, from anytime, an innocent on any side. The tags just reflect the latest horror that is being allowed to unfold.

  4. Touching story.

    Truth of our times.

Social media, TV etc may be curbed.

But, truth will be written and hopefully be out one day.

      1. Thank you. It’s an intolerable reality that must be made better. Well past enough holding hearts and souls hostage to hate. For the sake of all.

  7. The news is only ever from one point of view. Living with war, and humans need to stop.

    1. Will it ever stop though? I doubt it, I’m afraid.

  8. I really don’t want to like this but not because of the writing or story or anything like that. It’s because war is our sad(istic?) reality as a race. With the exception of three words this story could take place at any point during the last 2,000 years.

    1. Exactly that. I think we have to accept now that we will never learn. Thanks Michael.

  9. I’m beginning to feel the human race is becoming immune to suffering. Or at least that which they inflict on others.

    1. Yes absolutely. We seem to be unable to be shocked into doing anything differently now. We just accept it.

  10. It’s not the circle of life, it’s the circle of death because man cannot figure out how to live in peace. Fabulous writing, Iain.

    1. Thanks Dale. We are in such a sad way at the moment, and appear unable to step back from confrontation.

      1. Rinse and repeat. It’s terrible. We humans seem to be worse than ever.

  11. Sadly, warfare is an abiding reality that’s affected lives since time immemorial. Will it ever cease? I fear not.

    1. I agree Keith, I think it’s wishful thinking to ever think we can all come together and find peace. There are too many cruel people in the world.

  17. A very powerful story, Iain. His story must be told. It could be any time period throughout out history as humans are drawn to hate and violence. It’s incredibly sad.

  18. There’s so much said in these 100 words, Iain.

A testament to what is still happening today.

  19. Excellent write, Iain.

Remember Edwin Starr’s “War” (What is it good for?) Absolutely nothing!

We’re still singing the same old song and it’s so ineffably sad.

  20. I wonder how you arrived at this highly readable story from the innocent prompt. It must represent the lives of so many people in this day and age.
