IAIN KELLY

THE YARN SPINNER

‘Let me spin you a yarn,’ said the storyteller to the girl.

‘Once there was an young lady who sat with needle and thread,’ she began. ‘She sat all day darning all sorts of items from socks to sheets.

‘She took no money, but was grateful for gifts of thanks.

‘None of the villagers knew her well, but they all felt warmly towards her.

‘One day the village elder came to see her with his ceremonial robe in need of some repair.

‘When he arrived at her small dwelling, she was not in her chair, where she was usually to be found.

‘The alarm was raised, but despite a search, the lady was never seen in the village again.’

The girl waited. ‘What had become of her?’ she asked.

‘Why, she had come to the end of her thread and set off for a new life.’

‘Was that young lady you, Gran?’

The storyteller winked at the small girl and left her there as her name was announced:

‘This year’s recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature…’

What a lovely yarn you’ve spun here, Iain. And it’s a good thing her thread ran out. Here she is now, a Nobel Prize recipient. Well done, Gran 🙂

Nice twist! There are many places and happenings – both happy and sad – vanished into oblivion, but which have left stories for us.

    Congratulations on the new book!

I kept waiting for a fairytale ending in the traditional sense. Great modern twist.

Thank you, I don’t really write fairy tales, there is enough magic and strangeness in real life 🙂

The hard part many ties is to know when the right time comes to cut the thread to begin another career.

Her Gran has many interesting stories to tell, so it is good that the Nobel people have rewarded her.

Fantastic – I’m not sure it’s going to be that, but so long as a few people enjoy reading, I’ll take that. Thank you for getting a copy and do let me know what you think with a little review!
