‘There it is! The portal! We are saved!’

‘It’s not a portal, it’s a gap in the clouds.’

‘We haven’t seen a gap in the clouds for three years. It must be a sign from above!’

‘From who exactly?’

‘Why, from our saviour of course. Don’t you believe?!’

‘After the plagues, the earthquakes, the drought, the hurricanes, the volcanoes erupting, the meteor strike, the three years of dust clouds blanketing the earth, the mass extinction of crops and animals, the flooding from the rising sea levels and then the virus… yes, I am struggling to believe there is someone looking out for our best interests.’

‘It’s that sort of negative attitude that will get you into trouble.’

‘Get me into trouble? We haven’t eaten in two weeks, we’re stranded on this rock and we may be the last two people left alive. How much more trouble should I expect?’

‘Look at the rays shining down, they are searching for us! Over here, over here!’

‘Stop waving your arms around, you fool. Sit down and save your energy.’

‘I can feel it, it’s lifting me up, it’s taking me. Do you believe now! Farewell, my friend. Enjoy having the world to yourself!’

The gap in the clouds closed, the lambent faded. He sat alone. king of all he surveyed.

Above the clouds the spaceship entered light speed, whisking away the rare, exotic specimen they had plucked from the barren planet below. Soon they would start the experiments.
