THE STATE TRILOGY A-Z GUIDE: Q

My A-Z theme this year is a guide to my trilogy of novels called ‘The State Trilogy’. Set in an unnamed island country known only as ‘The State’, in the imagined near future, the books follow the intertwining stories of a number of characters, principally a State police detective named Danny Samson and an assassin, Gabriella Marino, over a period of six years. It begins with the assassination of an elected official and spirals into revolution and civil war. Part political thriller, action story, war story and dystopian science fiction, the trilogy took three years to complete and the books are available to read now – you can find links to purchase them HERE

In The State Trilogy, ‘Q’ stands for:

Quasimo: A character mentioned in the final book of the trilogy, ‘State Of War’, who plays a central role in the actions of the main characters, but who never actually appears. Quasimo is a profiteer and a mercenary in the civil war in Central City. He favours neither the State nor the Rebels, but deals with whoever will provide him with financial reward. He deals in goods, people and information, and has no morals or ideology that might cloud his judgement. His creed is very simple: he looks after himself. Danny and Gabriella have previously had dealings with him, but have decided not to have anything to do with him in the future. He does, however, inadvertently provide them with crucial intelligence that determines their fate, and the fate of Central City and the civil war. His name derived from something around the meaning of ‘quasi-‘ to reflect his ambiguous nature, and I’m happy with it as it gave me an option for the tricky ‘Q’ entry in the A-Z!

Next up – R is for: Rosalind Samson, Rona, Revolution and Rebellion, Religion, Rodrigo, Rome, Reviews and River

All the entries in the A-Z of ‘The State Trilogy’ can be found HERE

The books are available from a wide selection of online retailers, including AMAZON

  1. Quasimo sounds like my kind of character. You are right, Q is a difficult word to A2Z with.
    Cheers!

    1. Thank you – again, another character who could have a whole book devoted just to him, but has to settle for a small appearance in the books – so far!

      1. Iain, have you checked your spam folder? I commented on yesterday’s post but it doesn’t look like it posted.

  3. Totally unrelated to Q, but I’m starting to get to the point in the story where I can see how Gabriella and Danny are going to converge on their trajectory. That is an interesting name for a “character that never appears.” Interesting indeed!

  5. “He favours neither the State nor the Rebels, but deals with whoever will provide him with financial reward.” reads like a manifesto for all corrupt politicians and heads in the world.
Clever of you to have named him Quasimo:)

  8. Quasimo is indeed an interesting character, highly influential apparently as he has a hand in determining the fate of all. Upon reading the name, my first thought of course was of the hunchback of Notre Dame. With such a vivid personality, I suspect Quasimo may take on a more visual role at some point.
Thanks for visiting my site for Q today.

  9. Note to self: always be sure to include a character name (or location) that begins with Q in case I need it for an A to Z challenge. 🙂

  12. Sounds like an intriguing character. I’m quite fascinated with characters who impact the story but never actually appear. They may frustrate the readers (because reades like to have everything neatly spread in front of them), but when well done, it may enhence the mystery of the story… which readers will always appreciate.
