‘An unrecoverable error has occurred’.
That didn’t look good.
The blue screen of death appeared in front of her.
‘Do you wish to reboot? Y/N.’
She hovered over the two keys.
This was typical. First shift after almost two thousand years of waiting. Letting him do it all, not being trusted, watching him make mistake after mistake, patiently learning her trade and listening to his patronising pronouncements.
Then last week, he finally stood up and without ceremony told her. ‘I’ve had enough. It’s all yours.’
And now this aberration. Had he deliberately set her up?
Well, she would take her opportunity to do it right and clean up the mess he had made.
She hit the ‘Y’ key.
‘System reboot commencing. Do you wish to restore factory settings? Y/N.’
There was no going back now. She hit ‘Y’ again.
The screen went black, then a blinking white cursor appeared and more text.
‘Resetting System to Earth Version 1.0. Time Remaining for System Reboot: 5,949,490 hours.’
Time for a cuppa then.

Excellent take on the prompt. Great imagining.

Pre-Big Bang, just to be sure.

Yes, a complete reset to the very beginning is the safest way…

Maybe that’s what this pandemic is: our reset button . . .

It would be nice if we treated it that way, but I suspect we will mainly go back to our usual ways now that a vaccine seems close.

So timely in so many ways! My computer had a breakdown a few weeks ago so I know the feeling. 😉

Used to happen all the time few years before. You brought out the funniness of it all. Nice imagination work.

I think it’s about time for a system reboot back to the original factory settings. Great post, Iain.
