BON APPÉTIT

‘Salt and pepper?’

‘I’ll bring some over, sir. Any sauces?’

‘Ketchup, please darling.’

He gave me that look. That look that they all have that ends by drifting from my face down to my chest and as I walk away I can feel his eyes staring at my rear. The uniform we’re made to wear doesn’t help, tight black trousers and white blouse, top two buttons undone.

‘Table 3, order up!’

I’ll take my customary revenge, my only little moment of satisfaction. I hock a good loogie into his soup and carry it over. Give him the smile as the first spoonful reaches his mouth.

‘Enjoy, sir.’

  1. LOL! My dad always said don’t send things back to kitchen or make too many demands when eating in restaurants. 😀

  5. Ugh. Some customers are so lecherous. I couldn’t imagine doing such a thing though it was tempting to accidentally on purpose drope a plate in their lap…

  9. This one made my skin crawl. The uniform is deliberate, and not on the part of the person wearing it.

  10. Yikes! Reminds me of the Color Purple when Whoopi’s character spat in the man’s glass of water.

    1. Thank you. Yes, often shown in fiction films and programmes, I’m sure it must happen in real life.

      1. That’s fantastic, Iain! Will it be a mystery and/or intrigue? I’ve been okay. Looking forward to when life returns to normal and I can *pretend* to be normal. 😉

  16. Dear Iain,

In my time as a server, it never occurred to me to do that. However, I certainly had some customers who deserved it. I applaud your server. Good one.

    1. You are the model of restraint. I could imagine if I had ever been a server, I may have resorted to this! Thanks Rochelle.

  17. Exactly! My sister in law is one who treats server staff poorly. I treat anyone handling my food with great care and respect. When I can’t do that. I leave. Well done.

  18. That’s really gross, but he had it coming. Sad thing is, he probably won’t have a clue, and will continue to ogle waitresses because, after all, it’s his due.

  20. It was great to catch up with you, Iain. I’ve been doing so much research and striving away on non-fiction writing projects that I stopped doing these, and am trying to get back into the weekly swing of it. I’ve heard some horror stories of what happens when you upset staff in restaurants. Great story.Had a laugh.
    Best wishes,

  21. UGH! She had better save up a huge reservoir of lugies for each shift. This type of lascivious ogling is done as routine upon waitresses (and waiters!) Is it any wonder restaurants are begging for servers? BTW I absolutely disagree with how she handled it!

    1. I don’t mind her response – so long as no one does that to my food! 🙂

  22. Ha and yuck!! =) Having worked as a waitress years ago, I can relate to your character. Some customers are dreadful. Your story made me shudder though and I think I’ll avoid eating out for awhile.
